Friday, December 19, 2025 They Keep Watch

Two black cats perch atop the lintel that leads into the dining room. One sits upright with a calm and contemplative air. The other is bent over, looking down, paws out, tail up, ready to grab whate’er may pass by. Together, they keep watch.

Christmas is coming!

Those cats are going to catch this post and delete it in the morning.

Monday, December 15, 2025 Cold Feet, Purring Cat

It’s after bedtime, which means a short post is in order:

Luna’s warm body is next to me on the chair. My feet are cold. I wonder what she’d do if I tried to drape her over my feet for warmth? I suspect it wouldn’t end well. The purring would stop, for sure. I guess I can endure cold feet for a purring cat.

This green-eyed post will have to quit purring in the morning.

Monday, April 28, 2025 The Cat and the Girl

The Cat: Put me down, please.

The Girl: She’s so cuddly!

The Cat: Are we done yet?

The Girl: She loves it when I hold her!

The Cat: I see things I’d like to chase.

The Girl: What could be better than holding a soft cat?

The Cat: I should try squirming around. That ought to do it.

The Girl: Look at the camera, Puss!

The Cat: Nope.

The End.

The Blog: Finish me off.
The Writer: I’m not sure I’m done.
The Blog: You are.
The Writer: Delete.

Thursday, March 13, 2025 Cats and Leaves

A couple paintings from back in the day:

I copied the cats from someone else’s work, but added my own words. I may have shared this painting on the blog before, but don’t feel like going back and checking. The nice thing is that even if I did, you don’t remember it either, so it’s like you’re seeing it for the first time anyway.

Original artwork and poem.

Hey, speaking of poetry, ten of my poems will be published later this year in a poetry anthology called “I’ve Got A Bad Case of Poetry.” Isn’t that fun? Thank you to those of you who contributed to the Kickstarter campaign.

I’ll probably delete this in the green leaf morning.

Wednesday, February 12, 2025 The Workshop: Impossible House and a Cat

My sister visited recently and we decided to spend a little time watercolor painting. I found a couple paintings on Pinterest to copy and that’s been my artwork for the week.

Original painting by Lynda Hendrickson Shilhanek. My version looks a little wonky if you look at it too closely (and maybe you shouldn’t). The front of the house juts out a bit, but the roof still covers it in an impossible way. Kinda trippy! It was a quick painting and I enjoyed working on it.

Original by Lavinia de Boer. I mostly like how this one turned out, except for the legs and feet. Fortunately, you can’t see the original. Another quick painting!

I’ll probably delete this quick blog post in the morning.

Monday, March 8, 2021 Multiple Musings

1. My grandma used to decline to eat certain foods because they didn’t agree with her. It was all very mysterious to me when I was young and had an iron stomach. It is no longer a mystery.

2. Woke up to a beautiful misty morning recently and the first utterance out of my mouth that day was “Ooh!!” I ran down to get the camera and went out the back door. Can you ever get tired of seeing things like this? I think not.

3. Went for a long-ish hike yesterday since it was such a beautiful, balmy day. We are both looking forward to the hiking season this year, chipping away at our goal of going to every Minnesota State Park to do their Hiking Club trails. Yesterday was a bit of a warm-up and sure enough, my legs ache a little today. It’s good for me, right?

4. I watched a Dog Whisperer episode today that featured an Animal Communicator. It was hard to take her seriously. She kept saying things like “Zeus was communicating to me while he was running with Cesar and he was telling me that it was awesome!” Am I the only one who finds that kind of weird and laughable? Meanwhile, I challenge you to figure out what Luna is telling me:

On that note, I’m going to take my leave to go make pizza for supper. You can stay as long as you’d like, though. Feel free to tell me what you’ve been musing about lately. Or just tell me what you’re making for supper. That’ll do in a pinch.

I’ll probably delete this, but maybe I should ask my cat first.

April 27, 2018 Luna

Sometimes it’s just the two of us now, me and Luna. She has her secret cat thoughts and keeps them well hidden. Most of the time our paths don’t even cross, yet her silent companionship is somehow comforting. In the morning after a long lonely night, she comes into our room absolutely starved for attention, but at those moments she is loud and demanding, and I grant the attention begrudgingly. It is ungracious of me – I do not deserve her continued devotion. But like the lovingkindnesses and compassions of the Lord, her devotion is new every morning, whether I value it or not. It seems right and good to welcome this kindness of hers. I no more deserve it than I deserve God’s, yet there it is.

On a side note, I took this shot using the “photo illustration” effect. Nifty, eh? Look at those eyes – just look at them!

I’ll probably delete this in the morning (right after I give Luna some loving attention).
