These are a few of my favorite things…to hoard. I have a hard time getting rid of:

Empty shipping/packing boxes (of all sizes)

Empty card boxes

Product boxes that things came in because if we move, I can just put them back in their boxes!

Pretty much any empty box, actually

Fabric

Yarn

Art and craft supplies

Vases

Extra photos

Scrap paper

Sentimental items

Items we haven’t used in a long time, but as soon as we get rid of it, we’ll need (it’s happened before!)

Clothes that don’t fit

Clothes that do fit but that I don’t wear

Old technology

Books

Product information

We have lots of storage room in our house, which makes it “out of sight, out of mind.” We used to have Amish neighbors when we lived in Indiana. I could pop in on them at any time without notice (no phones) and their house was absolutely clutter free. I don’t think they even got junk mail!

There’s something about getting rid of clutter that feels sort of purifying to the soul. Every time we’ve moved we’ve had a purging session and most of the time I’ve never regretted getting rid of things. As I look over the above list again, I realize that at different times, I’ve been able to give away or throw away every single item on it with the proper motivation. The last time I got into the mood for de-cluttering was after watching a season of a show about Hoarders. Might be time to watch it again.

I’d love to know what kind of stuff you have a hard time getting rid of!

I’ll probably be hoarding these blog posts and not deleting them like I’ve saying all this time. Did you believe me?

  1. I have an unusual attachment to bedding of all sizes from all decades. Sheets, pillows, comforters (especially comforters). I think what’s behind it is a dreadful thought that I might have to go without any of these. Very odd
