Wednesday, July 28, 2021 Watercolor Italy Lesson 17 and Final Exam!

Now that I’m at the end of the Watercolor Travel through Italy lesson book, I can admit that I didn’t really understand until several lessons in that each of the paintings in the book are from different places in Italy and you can use your phone to access the maps to each of these places. I guess you’re really supposed to feel like you’re traveling through Italy as you paint. Just call me “slow on the uptake!”

Lesson 17 is a quaint little vineyard scene in Passo S. Giovanni.

I’ve struggled all along with getting the same richness of color as the original painting in the book and it’s especially noticeable with this one, but if you don’t compare it to the original, it’s not bad. That’s probably the way to go – just don’t look at the original.

And now, for the final exam! The last painting in the book did not have a photograph to go with it, nor did it have any instructions. I had to take what I’ve learned so far and apply it myself. I’ve learned a lot about mixing colors and using the wax resist technique. I never really liked using the white-out, so I didn’t use it at all in this one.

The artist’s original painting of the Church San Antonio. Andrej has a real natural way of interpreting these scenes very loosely.
My one and only attempt.

All in all, this was a valuable experience for me. These aren’t necessarily the types of paintings I would do but if I wanted to, I’m more confident now about trying it.

Now I want to come up with a new watercolor challenge. I’m open to ideas!

I might be deleting this in the mattina. Ciao!

  1. You’re paintings came out so well. You get an A+ from me for your travels through Italy. I’ve enjoyed them all and I can see an improvement from the first to the last. The church at San Antonio is my favorite. Very worthy of framing. You’re encouraging me to get my paints out…..once I finish my sewing project.
