Many years ago I got a copy of Edith Holden’s book “The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady.” It’s absolutely charming. She started it in 1906 as a nature diary with her notes and beautiful drawings and it goes through an entire year month by month. I immediately wanted to do something like it, but shelved the whole idea – there really wasn’t time in. my life for that kind of endeavor.

I pretty much forgot the book was on my shelf until it came to my attention again recently. Here I am – retired and busy, but with lots more time for these types of things. Why wait until January? So I’m starting it now. I’m not sure how it will end up, but I’m excited to give it a try. It will definitely have my own “stamp” on it. I’ll post a few photos now and then as I go.

So what should I name it? “The City Diary of an American Lady.” Um…I haven’t come up with anything else, but maybe some of you will have better suggestions. Submit them to our office.

I’ll probably be working on this project in the morning, so I’m not sure I’ll get around to deleting this post. You can do it if you have time.

  1. What a blast from the past, Lynnie!
I had that very same book (1970’s?),
but I’d forgotten all about it. Who knows what happened to it along the busy years…. I don’t recall writing in it, but doubtless I wrote some silliness in it. But I do remember admiring the drawings in it. Thanks for the memories!

  2. I don’t know about suggestions; yours is good. But I AM SO GLAD you are doing this! I love this book (I think I told you I have it)! I love YOUR stamp! Years ago, I subscribed to the Minnesota Horticultural Society monthly magazine. They recorded the patterns of nature each month (and most days of the month). It was wonderful, and I miss this submission (last I knew, they don’t do this anymore). Even if you don’t get a particular page drawn/painted or calligraphy done, don’t despair! If you at least write a note each day of the week, you can eventually catch up. Keep up the good work!

  3. Yay! You’re making a book! How about calling it “A Rice County Almanac?” (Shades of Aldo Leopold!) Maybe you’ll also get to compiling all your past writings into a book!

    1. I think Kris is reserving that name for his book so I’d better not take it. 😊 I’d love to compile my posts in a book. Still trying to figure that out. There are several websites that claim to be able to do it.
