Wednesday, February 14, 2024 The Workshop: Autumn Leaf, Wonky Water Pitcher, and Hankies

So far, my new resolve to do one watercolor painting per week is still barreling down the runway at full speed. Two weeks in a row! I try to keep my sights on just the next one to come, rather than letting the specter of doing one per week for the whole year loom over me. Age and experience are good companions when it comes to that kind of insight.

In a burst of creativity, I’m calling this one “Autumn Leaf;” it was inspired by a photo I took last fall. I haven’t written anything on it yet, but am considering putting a prayer on it that I wrote when I was a BSN Christian (Brand Spanking New – try to keep up). It goes like this: “The autumn leaf knows not the will of the wind, yet yields without hesitation to its call. Lord, grant me the humility and obedience of an autumn leaf.” Too bad I’m so wordy – that might be kind of hard to fit.

I’m doggedly determined to work through the “50 Ways to Draw Your Beautiful Ordinary Life” book, but it’s not delight driven yet. Maybe that will happen. This week’s lesson involved drawing a kitchen cupboard, so I worked on drawing our hutch.

I’m particularly fond of the wonky water pitcher on the left that looks like it’s melting into the plate underneath it. Once I let go of the idea that I needed to get the proportions exact, I let fly with the pencil with careless abandon. Onward!

Lastly, I’m contemplating a project for the Lynniebee Workshop. My mom was fond of giving embroidered handkerchiefs to her daughters. I dutifully thanked her and kept them in a box, not knowing what else to do with them. I mean, you don’t really want to blow your nose on one of them, right? I took them out recently and laid them out to see if inspiration would strike. I’ve had suggestions to use them to make a large quilt, several doll quilts, a table runner, tiny wedding dresses… If you have some ideas, let me know. I’ll keep you posted.

Happy Valentine’s Day to all of you!

The blog shows many things. Things that were, things that are, and some things that will get deleted in the morning. (Bonus points to anyone who can tell me the origin of that quote, which I admittedly changed to suit my purposes.)

  1. Seems like a natural for a quilt but that would be a lot of work. And all I’d have to do is admire it when it was done. Good job slipping in a LotR reference! The voice in my head when I read it was Galadriel’s.

      1. Not that I have ever made angel dresses…… I think it might be similar to

making corn husk dolls, or just dressing some of those extra small dolls

I have seen here and there. I think MSM has the right idea for napkins

        for a tea party- elegance!

  2. I am all about tea parties! Tasha Tudor

made sure her critters could participate in them.

I bet Mr. Fig (I may not have his name correct), being

the respectable fellow that he is, would like to be invited as well.
