Monday, January 13, 2025 Monday Meanderings

I need to take a survey. How many of you do this with your brown sugar:

Is it just a Minnesota thing? I keep a crust of bread in my brown sugar to keep it from going hard, like my mother did before me. It feels like important lore that should be passed on from generation to generation.

New topic: flooring. We’ve been in this house for just about 20 years and have replaced a lot of flooring (almost all of it) over those years. This year, in 2025, the last remaining carpet original to the house will finally be taken away from our sight like the eyesore that it is. The carpet is dead, long live the new Pergo flooring! My husband will be doing all the removal and installation, but I played a somewhat significant role in boxing up all the books that resided in the bookshelves.

Isn’t it exciting? We have to take what excitements we can whilst living through January.

Blessed be the Lord who daily loads us with benefits – Here are a few from this past week:

a husband who loves working hard
Cortisone shots and happier knees
Prayer time with women at our church via Zoom
Tea time in the afternoon
homemade bread and soup
having a local swimming pool
A formal ball hosted by our church
The hymn: Rise Again Ye Lion Hearted

I’ll probably delete this in the morning…

  1. Yes, I have placed bread in with my brown sugar in the past. I am not sure if it helped (I can’t remember. This is too big a question of me, like Pooh, of little brain!), but I concentrate more on what kind of container (sealed properly?) it is in. I say, if it works, pass it on!

Thank you so much for the inspiration! For this week: 1) Health, 2) a safe drive up to Saint Paul and back, 3) earthly family, 4) the Family of God, 5) God’s Word and the 6) words in hymns and 7) spiritual songs. Numbers 3-7 I have felt acutely this past week.

    1. Good work to both of you in making way for a new floor and putting in the new floor! It looks great! How does it feel to have completed it?

We are still “in process” of replacing the original carpet (to tile, not carpet) in Dave’s “Man-Cave” downstairs. That carpet was there when we purchased our home in 1984! You all are way ahead of us!

      1. Oh, it’s a long way from being completed. Check out the last photo with hubby still toiling away at removing the previous flooring under the carpet! The Pergo will have the look of a wood laminate floor. Still, he hopes to have it mostly installed by the end of the week.

Some house projects just don’t rise to the top very fast. Wait until Dave retires and see what happens!! 😁.

        1. Absolutely! Seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, his “honey do” list is growing daily! In the meantime, Dave is busy with projects at Georgie and Joe’s house! I am patient and have a lot to look forward to.

      1. I’ll have to think. They weren’t necessarily from our recent service, I think from the radio this time. It would be good for me to remember. I do remember my worship and commenting to Dave- how could we ever survive without our Triune God?

  2. That was quite a job to empty all those bookcases! Either you have many heavy boxes now or stacks of books somewhere unseen. I do not put bread in my brown sugar. I keep mine in a Tupperware container and that seems to do the trick. It looks like you use the “dark” brown sugar. I also use that–love the higher amount of molasses. Tell Kris to keep up the good work–looks like a job “not” for your knees 🙂

    1. I think we ended up with almost 40 boxes of books – they’re all in our entryway. When we reshelve, though, we’re going to go through them carefully and try to organize them better, while also setting aside some to rid of. Yes, I definitely prefer the dark brown sugar – that molasses taste. Yum! You’re right, I won’t be helping Kris at all when it comes to floor installation. Its a good thing we don’t both have knee problems!

  3. I don’t do that with my brown sugar, (probably should). My mom never taught me that one. I may try it. How wonderful to have a husband that will take on projects like that. Kudos, Kris!

    1. If your brown sugar stays soft, you are storing it in a good container, so you don’t need the bread. If I leave the bread out of mine, the sugar dries up and is hard to use. Maybe all I need is a better container! 😊 I try not to take it for granted that my husband enjoys these home improvement projects. It’s such a blessing!
