Tuesday, May 12, 2026 Commonplace Quotes: You Are His Arrow

God brought forth the wind out of His treasuries here today. There’s something quite stirring (literally I guess) about sitting out on a spring day when the trees are swaying and the sound of the wind ruffling the leaves is constant, when the skies are filled with puffy little clouds that float merrily along in the breeze. It can make you think deep thoughts and revitalize your brain. Try it sometime and you’ll see that I am right.

A few quotes from my book (and it is only a few – I have neglected it while traveling).

There is no better test of a man’s ultimate chivalry and integrity than how he behaves when he is wrong.
G.K. Chesterton

I can be rather inwardly pouty when I am wrong. Sometimes outwardly. I resolve to do better.

The birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus
means that one day
everything sad will come untrue.
JRR Tolkien

Glorious, glorious truth!

A saint’s life is in the hands of God like a bow and arrow in the hands of an archer. God is aiming at something the saint cannot see, and He stretches and strains, and every now and again the saint says, “I cannot stand anymore.” God does not heed. He goes on stretching till His purpose is in sight, then He lets fly.
Oswald Chambers

Are you being stretched? Do you feel the string taut on your bow? How encouraging to know that God is aiming you at something for His good and godly purposes and He will not hold that arrow forever – He will let it fly at the right time.

Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing your praises, O God:
Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
The Book of Common Prayer

It is sunset as I write this, so I had to include that beautiful prayer with the lilting phrase “the vesper light.”

I’ll probably delete this when the vesper light has completely left the sky…

Monday, March 23, 2026 6:00 A.M.

At 6:00 a.m. the birds twitter
The sun creeps o’er the earth
And dark night once again
Gives way to sunlight’s mirth

I stepped outside briefly this morning when I saw those first glimmers of sun spreading in the east. The birds were, indeed, a-twitterin’, the most cheerful sound you can hear on a cold spring morning.

Recovery from knee replacement surgery has been a long night, but I see glimmers of sun in the east.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow.

The dark night of this post will give way to sunlight’s mirth in the morning.

Monday, March 2, 2026 The Annual Ritual

The month of March is upon us, which means that I can at last put a halt to my insufficient efforts to keep the poinsettia alive. It’s time to set it free out in the wild.

Our compost heap may not look exactly like “free out in the wild,” but it’s all relative. The plant has been freed from the shackles of the green plastic pot. It has gone from our tame and dull home to a place where birds might alight next to it (or even on it!) or some little critter might scamper around its leaves. Like I said, free and wild.

I look forward to this ritual every year. The poinsettia had company this year: a dozen Valentine roses that had gasped their last breath and diminished into themselves.

And now, a bonus photo for you:

Sunrise through the trees! Looks positively molten, doesn’t it? The photo didn’t turn out the way I expected, but I ended up liking it anyway.

I’ll probably delete this in the morning after it has gasped its last breath.

Thursday, May 15, 2025 The Debris is Blowing in the Wind

I don’t think Bob Dylan would mind me changing up the words to that song a little bit today. If you live in our neck of the woods, your house has been buffeted by strong winds, your trees are having a mighty swaying party, and dust clouds are obscuring the landscape. I tried to get a photo, but it was hard to get one that told the whole story. When you look at it, insert the sound effects as much as you can.

See the debris blowing in the wind?

Last night I went out to take a few photos of the sky and surroundings as the sun was setting. I wanted more color so I cheated and used the vivid setting on my camera. Let’s call it “art” instead of cheating, okay?

Oh yes, that last photo is my announcement that we’ve got our fountains running again, a harbinger of warm weather. Come and visit and we’ll sit on a bench and enjoy the ambiance. Tell me your stories and I’ll tell you mine. Deal?

I’ll probably delete this vividly in the morning.

Monday, March 8, 2021 Multiple Musings

1. My grandma used to decline to eat certain foods because they didn’t agree with her. It was all very mysterious to me when I was young and had an iron stomach. It is no longer a mystery.

2. Woke up to a beautiful misty morning recently and the first utterance out of my mouth that day was “Ooh!!” I ran down to get the camera and went out the back door. Can you ever get tired of seeing things like this? I think not.

3. Went for a long-ish hike yesterday since it was such a beautiful, balmy day. We are both looking forward to the hiking season this year, chipping away at our goal of going to every Minnesota State Park to do their Hiking Club trails. Yesterday was a bit of a warm-up and sure enough, my legs ache a little today. It’s good for me, right?

4. I watched a Dog Whisperer episode today that featured an Animal Communicator. It was hard to take her seriously. She kept saying things like “Zeus was communicating to me while he was running with Cesar and he was telling me that it was awesome!” Am I the only one who finds that kind of weird and laughable? Meanwhile, I challenge you to figure out what Luna is telling me:

On that note, I’m going to take my leave to go make pizza for supper. You can stay as long as you’d like, though. Feel free to tell me what you’ve been musing about lately. Or just tell me what you’re making for supper. That’ll do in a pinch.

I’ll probably delete this, but maybe I should ask my cat first.
