I’m ready to start the next felt animal in the project book: Purslane, the Hedgehog! I’m open to other names, by the way. Purslane is an ubiquitous weed that also has medicinal properties – you’ve got it all over your yard, no doubt. Does the name fit our new friend?

I’ve got everything I need to start working on this furry little creature…except for the fur! The pattern calls for “hedgehog fur fabric.” I’m here to tell you that this is not a stock item at Joann’s. I only need a small swatch (6×5 inches). Got any ideas? Do any of you happen to have hedgehog fur lying around in your house?

I’m going to go all girlie on you here: I think hedgehogs are ADORABLE!!!

Now that it’s starting to cool off a little bit, I’ve dusted off my knitting needles and am continuing some work on a pair of mittens I started last winter to donate to a friend’s afterschool program.

What you don’t see when you look at them is their unique soundtrack. In the same “dusting off” theme, I have rediscovered our record album player and have been systematically playing our albums while knitting. This has been quite an eclectic playlist, ranging from Men At Work (Dr. Heckyll and Mr. Jive; It’s A Mistake) to Verdi’s Requiem (Dies Irae, Dies Illa…Rex Tremendae Majestatis…). I sang the Verdi Requiem as part of a 300-member choir in college. I had to stop knitting a few times because I was becoming so verklempt (I love that word!) listening to it.
I’m catching up with myself in the Psalm Project. It’s been fun coloring in the pages that I did six years ago, but it’s looming on the horizon that I’ll have to start creating new ones, soon. Hold my feet to the fire, people!

How kind of you to read through to the end. I have the best blog readers in the world!
I’ll probably delete this when I find hedgehog fur, which might require a door-to-door search in the neighborhood. How’s that for creepy?
He’s much too cute to be given the name of a weed. Something like maybe Periwinkle fits him much better….or even hydrangea. I’m sure you could come up with something even better. My sewing project right now is recovering throw pillows. Not near as much fun as yours.

I like Periwinkle!! Your throw pillows will be a lot easier, though. I’m dreading working on his teeny tiny arms!

Hi Lynnie!
I love playing the name game!
I like “Periwinkle”, but my mind locked on to girlie names:
Harriet, Hedwig, Hyacinth, Hannah, Hetty/Hettie, Hildagard, Henrietta, and….Miss Plum. Take your pick!
Also, I might have just the thing for the hedgehog fur that you seek. I will show it to you when I see you next week.

Nope, he’s definitely a he hedgehog!! The hat gives it away. However, maybe I could make a Mrs. hedgehog with more of a girlie hat to sit in his sleigh with him! I’ll keep those names in mind. And I’m very excited that you might have hedgehog fur for me!!!

“Almond” the Hedgehog.
(He looks like an almond in one of his photos.)

Almond…Almond… that’s a thought! You’re right, he does look like a hairy almond. 😃

Well, I like Purslane! And it’s not a weed, but a nutritious addition to any salad! Do I hear
anyone complain about weeds in their tea when they drink chamomile tea? Chamomile
spreads like a weed. Theresa’s names for Mrs. Hedgehog sounded good, and Al sounds good too,
but Purslane seems much more distinguished for this young chap! If he plans to associate with your other friends, I think distinguished needs to be working adjective here!

After I wrote the post I remembered that purslane could be eaten. I appreciate your vote to keep his name as it is! You’ve given a compelling argument!
